Lean-to sheds are compact and practical

Lean-to sheds or compact tool sheds are indispensable when you want to have a place to keep your garden tools and more. Having a compact lean-to shed in either metal or wood will make it much easier to find the tools and other things you need to get the work done around the garden. Whether you want to weed, mow the lawn, prune the trees or cut the hedge, you can always find what you ned inside the compact lean-to shed. A lean-to shed does not take up very much space but will still provide you with plenty of space for tools and more. A lean-to shed will blend in nicely almost anywhere.

How to assemble your lean-to shed

All our garden sheds are delivered as a DIY assembly set with various parts to be assembled by you or by people you hire for the job. When assembling one of our popular lean-to garden sheds in metal panels, you need to wear gloves as the panels have sharp edges. For both the metal sheds and the wooden sheds, we recommend that you are 2 for the assembly job as the parts may be heavy or delicate until they are in place. Start by making sure that all the parts are there – read the manual and start the job. Admitted, there is a lot of parts when you look at it the first time but you will soon get the hang of it and the various screws and bolts are there for a reason – to make the garden shed strong and durable.

How to maintain your lean-to shed

When you order a metal lean-to shed, you do not have to worry about maintenance after assembly. From time to time, you may have to remove leaves and more from the roof and sometimes you can have algae and more growing on exposed surfaces and if you have trees and bushes close to the shed. Just use a brush and water to remove and clean.

When you want a wooden shed, a little more work is required. Having a lean-to shed in natural wood, you need to treat it with a good quality wood protection as soon after assembly as possible. Otherwise, the natural wood will not be protected against the weather. A way to keep the natural look is to use a transparent wood protection or a wood oil containing fungicide. Ask where you purchase your paint and wood protection. It may be a good idea to apply some oil on the interior surfaces but beware that you do not use oil with fungicide as it may be harmful inside a shed. You can order one of our pre-painted lean-to sheds, but you will still need to repaint after some time as you always have to do with wooden buildings and more.

Which base or foundation is right for a lean-to shed?

It is important to place your new lean-to shed on a firm and even foundation or base such as flagstones, a wooden deck, cement, stamped gravel, or similar. This will provide stability, easier assembly, and durability. An unstable or uneven foundation will provide a lot of problems, including a potentially shorter lifespan for the shed and trouble getting the doors and windows to operate smoothly.

The following types of foundations are all good and solid foundations for lean-to sheds and other smaller buildings. Each foundation type has its pros and cons, so if in doubt, visit your local builder’s market or ask a professional builder. It is not a very difficult task, but it is important that you do it right from the start! The type of foundation may also depend on the type of soil in the garden – is the ground sloping, do you already have a patio with flagstones, how big is the shed and how much are you prepared to pay for the foundation.

  1. Concrete Slab Base
  2. Strip Foundations
  3. Paving slabs or flagstones
  4. Adjustable Riser Pedestal or Breeze Blocks on gravel
  5. Stop Digging Ground Screw or GroundPlug©

Where to place your lean-to shed

It is obvious that you should place your lean-to shed up against a house or maybe a garden wall. Some of our lean-to sheds have four walls and could be placed separate from other buildings while other lean-to sheds do not have the last wall and will need to be up against a wall to be complete.

It is always important to have easy access to the lean-to shed, whether you use it for garden tools, bicycles, or toys for the children. Some may prefer a minimalistic garden layout and want to place the lean-to shed on flagstones and nothing else enjoying the elegant and simple design. However, many would also like the lean-to shed to be a more integrated part of the garden. Plant flowers and shrubs around the shed – leave the entrance accessible - and cover it with natural plants and flowers. A more flexible solution is to place large pots and containers around the shed to make it look soft and inviting.

Do you have a wooden lean-to shed in natural wood? Then you can paint it in a colour of your liking and maybe hang a bird house or other decorations to make the lean-to shed personal and elegant. You can also establish light inside your shed so you can find things in there even when it is dark. If you have an electrician installing light, it would be a great idea to let him or her put in a socket at the same time. Then you can plug various machines in when working outside.

Lean-to sheds are part of a wide selection of garden sheds

Our lean-to sheds are easy to assemble and very flexible. You can place a lean-to shed almost anywhere and often you can place the door in either end of the shed depending on how you want to use the shed. Apart from our popular lean-to sheds, we offer a wide selection of other types of garden sheds - from other compact sheds up to large sheds with over 12 m² for storing garden tools, machines, bikes and more. You can have the sheds in steel, wood, or polycarbonate.
