How to maintain your garden shed

Most of our garden sheds are made of metal or polycarbonate and are maintenance-free. In short, you do not have to do anything apart from keeping all the things inside the shed in good order. The ProShed® metal sheds come with a 10 years corrosion perforation warranty and the sheds made of polycarbonate will also stay the same for many years. From time to time, you may have to remove leaves and more from the roof and sometimes you can have algae and more growing on exposed surfaces. Just wash using a brush and water.

Another type of garden shed is our wooden garden sheds in natural wood or pre-painted. When you order a garden shed in natural wood, you have to paint the shed yourself after assembly to keep the material well protected against the weather. We recommend that you start by applying some good quality wood oil containing fungicide to protect the wood. Apply the oil both outside and inside to protect all surfaces.

After applying the oil, you need to apply wood protection on the exterior surfaces. Use a neutral paint to preserve the natural look or use a paint in a colour of your liking. Even if you order one of the pre-painted garden sheds, you need to repaint after some time as you always have to do with natural wood outdoor – look at the surface of your shed and paint when needed. How often you need to paint is a little depending on where the garden shed is placed. Near the ocean you can often see paint deteriorating a little faster due to the salt in the air.

Wood is a strong, beautiful and organic material

Wood is strong and durable but you can prolong the lifespan of the wood considerably if you take good care of it. It means that you should maintain and protect your wooden shed regularly to keep the wood in perfect condition for many years. Here you can see a few ‘tricks’ to protect your wooden shed so it will stay beautiful and fresh for years.

Avoid moist

When you receive your wooden shed, it comes as a DIY assembly set. Start by checking that all the parts are there and get an overview of all the bits and pieces. Be sure to protect the natural wood against rain and moist before starting to assemble the shed. It can be a good idea to have tarpaulins ready in case of rain.

When you start assembling the shed, we recommend that you place a barrier between the foundation and the shed to prevent moist coming up from the ground and into the wood. Use roofing carboard or similar. You can buy it at your local Builder’s Market and more.

Be sure to use primer oil with fungicide

When you have assembled your wooden shed, we recommend that you apply oil with fungicide to all surfaces both outside and inside the shed. The oil will make the wood gets saturated so it will not absorb moist. Then you apply a high-quality wood protection – natural or in your favourite colour. Do not wait too long from the oil is dry to you apply the paint – otherwise the effect of the oil can be reduced.

To get the best result, it is our recommendation to apply two layers of wood protection in order to seal the wood and protect it in the best possible way.
